Composite is a resin with a consistency similar to modeling clay. The dentist puts it into the tooth to fill the space, then cures the resin with a special light. Strong and durable, composite resembles the color of natural teeth.
Also known as temporary fillings, sedative fillings are a temporary solution used when the decay is extensive. The material helps to soothe the nerves deep in the tooth while allowing the natural healing process to begin. Temporary fillings are, as the name suggests, replaced at a later visit with the permanent filling material.
Amalgam has been in use for over 180 years. It’s a safe mixture of metals that, when they come together, go through a chemical process that results in hardening. Amalgam fillings last a long time but are silver in color, making them best for use in the back of the mouth.
Ceramic is a durable, long-lasting material that typically requires less space to get a “hold” when placed in a tooth. It requires less material to be removed from the tooth and can last up to 15 years. In addition, ceramic is less noticeable than metal options.
Composite, metal-free fillings are a more environmentally friendly choice of filling that can be tinted to match the natural color of the teeth. They are best suited to the front teeth, where silver or gold fillings will be more noticeable.
Although not as strong as composites and amalgam fillings, glass ionomer fillings are attractively colored to match the natural tooth, making them a good choice for the front teeth. They’re not suitable for biting surfaces but are durable enough for non-load-bearing areas of the teeth, so they’re most commonly used on the surfaces of front teeth for a discrete solution to cavities that don’t affect the structure and strength of the tooth.
